Perth Beijing Chinese School

Fantastic experience: I joined Perth Beijing School in Northbridge with two goals in mind: prepare for future travels and give my brain a little neuroplasticity workout. After all, research says learning a new language helps rewire your brain and may even keep dementia at bay; and if that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is. We started as a group of six complete beginners… or so we thought. In reality, we were a delightful mix of true novices, “I did this 10 years ago” returnees, and “I swear I only know a little” secret pros. Thankfully, we had the wonderful Vanessa Lǎoshī, who paced the class to the needs of the slowest learner (usually me, and I’ve made peace with that). Because of this, we technically completed HSK 1 without actually finishing every single HSK 1 lesson — a paradox only language students will understand. When we moved into HSK 2, the first five or so classes felt more like “HSK 1: The Director’s Cut,” as we were still working through the HSK 1 workbook. This isn’t a criticism of the teaching at all — if anything, it shows how much the school adapts to real humans with real learning speeds. Adult brains don’t always cooperate, but Vanessa Lǎoshī certainly did. The challenge was real, but so were the rewards. Our lessons genuinely helped during our recent trip to China (trip number three!), and we’re grateful for Vanessa’s patience, humour, and perseverance in guiding a group of adults who sometimes needed more encouragement than teenagers. A solid five stars — highly recommend for anyone wanting a supportive, flexible, and good‑humoured introduction to Mandarin. 谢谢你, Vanessa Lǎoshī!

Fantastic experience: I’ve completed HSK 1 and HSK 2 at Perth Beijing Chinese School, and I’m currently studying HSK 3, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with my learning progress. Compared to trying to learn Mandarin on my own, studying here has made a huge difference. I’m retaining vocabulary and grammar much better, and I now feel genuinely comfortable reading, writing, and speaking Mandarin. The structured courses, clear guidance from the teachers, and well-designed class activities make learning feel approachable rather than overwhelming. The teachers are patient, knowledgeable, and very supportive, and the lessons are engaging and practical, which really helps build confidence in using Mandarin in real situations. Each level feels well paced and thoughtfully planned, making it easy to see progress over time. If you’re serious about learning Mandarin, whether you’re a complete beginner or working towards higher HSK levels, I highly recommend Perth Beijing Chinese School. It’s a welcoming environment that truly makes learning Mandarin enjoyable and achievable.

As an absolute beginner in Mandarin, I was nervous about starting, but my experience here was nothing short of fantastic, largely thanks to my teacher (Lǎoshī), Vanessa. Vanessa is an exceptional educator. Her patience is truly boundless; she creates a classroom environment where no question is too small and mistakes are seen as essential steps in learning. She has a remarkable talent for breaking down complex grammar and the nuances of tones into understandable elements. Her explanations are clear, creative and she consistently checks for understanding, ensuring no one gets left behind. Beyond being an excellent teacher, she is also incredibly encouraging and kind, which makes every lesson both productive and enjoyable. The school itself is well-organised and offers a great learning structure. I also had the pleasure of interacting with Alex (who I believe manages the school). He was always incredibly quick to respond to any enquiries, whether by email or phone, and was perpetually happy and thorough in answering all my questions about classes, materials, and levels. This efficient and friendly communication made the administrative side of things completely seamless. Thanks to Vanessa’s expertise, patient guidance and the supportive, well-run framework of the Perth Beijing School, I have not only learned a great deal but have also found a real passion for continuing my Chinese language journey.
