Perth Beijing Chinese School

Fantastic experience: I joined Perth Beijing School in Northbridge with two goals in mind: prepare for future travels and give my brain a little neuroplasticity workout. After all, research says learning a new language helps rewire your brain and may even keep dementia at bay; and if that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is. We started as a group of six complete beginners… or so we thought. In reality, we were a delightful mix of true novices, “I did this 10 years ago” returnees, and “I swear I only know a little” secret pros. Thankfully, we had the wonderful Vanessa Lǎoshī, who paced the class to the needs of the slowest learner (usually me, and I’ve made peace with that). Because of this, we technically completed HSK 1 without actually finishing every single HSK 1 lesson — a paradox only language students will understand. When we moved into HSK 2, the first five or so classes felt more like “HSK 1: The Director’s Cut,” as we were still working through the HSK 1 workbook. This isn’t a criticism of the teaching at all — if anything, it shows how much the school adapts to real humans with real learning speeds. Adult brains don’t always cooperate, but Vanessa Lǎoshī certainly did. The challenge was real, but so were the rewards. Our lessons genuinely helped during our recent trip to China (trip number three!), and we’re grateful for Vanessa’s patience, humour, and perseverance in guiding a group of adults who sometimes needed more encouragement than teenagers. A solid five stars — highly recommend for anyone wanting a supportive, flexible, and good‑humoured introduction to Mandarin. 谢谢你, Vanessa Lǎoshī!

As an absolute beginner in Mandarin, I was nervous about starting, but my experience here was nothing short of fantastic, largely thanks to my teacher (Lǎoshī), Vanessa. Vanessa is an exceptional educator. Her patience is truly boundless; she creates a classroom environment where no question is too small and mistakes are seen as essential steps in learning. She has a remarkable talent for breaking down complex grammar and the nuances of tones into understandable elements. Fantastic experience: I've completed an HSK1 course, nearing the end of an HSK2 course and keen for more. This is an excellent place to learn one of the world's leading languages and I would definitely say it's Perth's leading Chinese school. Our class teacher Vanessa is fantastic and I had some classes with Teacher Wang who is also excellent. Small class sizes run at a good pace. My proficiency in the language has sky-rocketed since I began classes here. Now I'm planning a trip to China and I'm excited with where my Chinese studies will take me.

Fantastic experience: Started from HSK2 a year ago and I've just finished HSK4 ✌️. From just being able to say hi and bye in Chinese and recognise a few simple characters, now I'm able to hold conversations, not just in the class but also at my workplace with my colleagues and customers; to enjoy scrolling Weibo and Xiao Hong Shu . I've enjoyed every single class, which was customised to students' progress with various sources of learning materials, so you'll not get bored . Some little tips to fast track and enjoy your learning experience are 1. Listen to Chinese songs and watch shows in Chinese; 2. Try to talk in Chinese whenever you have a chance, especially in the class, Alex will be there to help

Fantastic experience: This is a first class learning facility. The staff are without exception absolutely excellent and really care for their students progress and cater for all levels of ability. The fees are not high and well worth spending. The school treats everyone with respect whereever they come from. I wish all schools were like this one. They have my highest respect.

Classes are flexible and are tailored to students' needs, and each student's learning speed and ability is catered for. At the time of writing there were no formal assessments as part of the units, however the classes ensured that all the students in my classes stayed well on track to meet each unit's HSK target. Fantastic experience: I have been taking Chinese lessons for about two years. Initially, I was in a class on Saturday mornings. Now I have one-on-one lessons on Zoom with my very capable teacher. I have enjoyed both formats, in-class in a group and one-on-one online. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Having a good instructor is what makes either successful. My instructor is completely bilingual. She is very competent and targets the lesson well for ability and need. She is flexible in providing help and extension where needed. I would highly recommend Perth Beijing Chinese School if you want to learn Chinese.

Fantastic experience: The best learning experience in Perth. Excellent teachers!

Negative experience: I requested a beginners class, but they don’t actually have one, though it is listed as such. There was an expectation to not only speak mandarin but read it after one class, which would be suitable for an intermediate class not a beginner with no background in the language. When I asked to be transferred to a beginners class, it was only then I found out the truth of the classes, with no apology for the speed of teaching, just a keep coming. So after the third class I realised it was of no point as it was way to advanced for a beginner, as the class was expect to know how to structure a mandarin sentence. I found an online tutorial that is a genuine beginners teaching aid. And have started to make progress. To be honest this school is just a waste of money.

Fantastic experience: Being of Chinese heritage on my mum side but never learnt the language when I was young, at tender age of 50 with hearing disabilities I started to learn with Alex Shi at the Beijing Chinese School. He is very patience and work with you at whatever stage you are at learning the language. Due to work commitments I have not been able to go to class as often but Alex has allow me to continue via correspondence. The notes, audio and the app combined together help you achieve the goals you set. I would recommend contacting Beijing Chinese School if you have a keen interest in learning mandarin.

As myself working FIFO and my roster is never consistent, Alex is very good at catering different times when i'm available to attend. The class is very welcoming and small, and a nice Hot green tea waiting upon arrival which is nice. Alex has alot of patience and his teaching materials are great and simple to fellow. Each teaching lesson is different aswell which further enhances your learning. Fantastic experience: Great small classes with plenty of engagement, time to actually speak the language. Alex encourages and explains everything very well. Fantastic experience: I have studied for around 8-months with Alex and I would highly recommend attending his classes to those interested in learning authentic conversational Chinese in a comfortable learning environment. I believe the smaller class sizes (up to 4 people) is ideal for learning correct tone usage and allows Alex to personalise the teaching for all levels of skill. Having learnt languages at bigger institutes in the past, I can see huge benefits to having smaller groups - especially with a language such as Chinese Mandarin. His classes are flexible and he is able to accomodate people with busy schedules by offering alternatives. Fantastic experience: Alex is a great teacher and very patient. The course is designed well and I was able to start speaking and practicing with my Chinese friends from the first few lessons.

Positive experience: I have been studying at PBCS since Jan 2015. Love it as the class size is small, the interaction not intimidating and have learnt more than I expected in the last 10 or so months. This speaks much for Alex's teaching and business model. Will recommend to others and also intend to keep on with it as long as I can afford to. 4 star only because learning only spoken and not learning how to write in Mandarin so cannot assess.
