Cairns College of English & Business is an independent school established in March 2010 as an English language centre, catering for the English language needs of international students. We are a CRICOS registered provider, NEAS accredited and a member of ACPET. We have also just become an IALC accredited language school. Our college also hosts many study tour students who come to learn English and experience all the fantastic activities that Far North Queensland has to offer.

Our comment from StudyLanguages about Cairns College of English & Business:

Cairns College of English & Business (CCEB) is a vibrant educational institution located in the heart of Cairns, Australia. It offers a range of courses that cater to students from diverse backgrounds, focusing on English language and commercial cookery. Here are some highlights based on student experiences:

  • Supportive Environment: Students consistently rave about the friendly and kind teachers who make learning enjoyable. Many felt welcomed and valued, contributing to a family-like atmosphere.
  • Specialized Programs: The college offers tailored courses that strike a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, especially in cookery programs that prepare students for real-life kitchen environments.
  • Multicultural Experience: The diverse student body allows for rich cultural exchanges, making it easy to make friends from around the world.
  • Location: Conveniently situated near the esplanade and shopping areas, students appreciate the accessibility and amenities around the school.

However, some students highlighted concerns regarding the management practices, particularly with respect to financial policies and communication. A small number felt that certain staff members lacked empathy and professionalism, which negatively impacted their experiences. Despite these criticisms, many students felt that the overall learning experience and friendships formed were rewarding.

Overall, CCEB stands out as a place where students can improve their English skills while enjoying a supportive community, although potential students are advised to inquire about the course structure and additional fees upon enrollment.

Fantastic experience: I spent six months studying at CCEB. I especially enjoyed Stewart’s classes the most, and that’s where my English skills improved the most❤️

Fantastic experience: The teachers were kind, the facilities were clean, and I was able to make many friends. My dorm room was also clean and comfortable, as I had my own room.

Fantastic experience: G20 student here!! I’ve just finished my course and I just want to say thank you so much to my teachers, especially Chris and AJ. I honestly really enjoyed my time here. I’m so happy I made it to the end, but at the same time it feels a bit sad to leave. Chris and AJ made everything feel easy and comfortable, and I always felt supported in class. I really appreciate all the time and effort you guys put into teaching us. Thank you for everything, I’ll really miss being here! (I hope you guys can read this! )

Fantastic experience: I have just finished my Commercial Cookery course at CCEB, and it was a very valuable experience. The course provided a good balance between theory and practical training, which helped me feel more confident working in a real kitchen environment. The trainers were professional and always willing to help. Overall, I would highly recommend this college to anyone who wants to start a career in hospitality.

Fantastic experience: I had a really good experience studying Commercial Cookery Certificate III, IV and Diploma at this college. My English is not perfect, but the trainers and staff were very supportive and helpful. I learned many useful skills, not only cooking but also how to manage a kitchen, run a restaurant or food business, and manage staff and money. We also learned about Australian rules and standards, which is very important for this industry. My classmates were also amazing. We supported and encouraged each other, which made the experience more enjoyable.

Fantastic experience: I am very happy with the CCEB Commercial Cookery course. The teachers, including Chris, were always kind and helped me whenever I had questions about techniques. I had a good rotation in the kitchen and could use all the skills I learned in my work. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the culinary industry. Thank you very much!

Negative experience: I enrolled in a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery last September, and overall, my experience at this school was quite disappointing. Unlike most people who sign up just to extend their stay in Australia, I genuinely wanted to learn a new profession and thought the course would be valuable. I was very disappointed. The teachers are skilled professionals, but they don’t seem passionate about teaching. It’s clear they just want to finish the class as quickly as possible and go home, keeping lessons as short as they can. When I enrolled, we were told we’d have several classes per week, both theory and practical. But as the weeks and months passed, I was surprised to see we never had more than two classes a week—usually just one theory class in the morning and one practical in the afternoon. The rest of the hours required by the government are labelled as “independent study,” which basically means going to class to study on your own. If your goal is just to buy time in Australia and attend the least amount of class possible, this is the right school for you. But if you truly want to learn, I suggest you look elsewhere. I also want to highlight that they make you feel like a money machine, constantly trying to charge you extra whenever they can. While everything I’m about to mention is technically written in the contract you sign as a student, some of their practices are questionable from an ethical standpoint. For example, they mix the delivery of units, so you might be taught a unit due in November, then the next week one that’s due in October. If you miss a deadline, they charge you $100 per unit and block your portal until you pay. If you have financial issues and can’t pay immediately, your portal remains blocked, which means you’ll miss even more deadlines and your debt will keep increasing. Another thing I find unfair (even though it’s in the contract, so legally they’re covered) is that if you miss a class for any reason, they fine you $100. Depending on the reason, I think this is excessive. One situation that shocked me was during a practical class where we were supposed to make meatballs, but the class was cancelled due to “budget cuts.” Apparently, the $10,000 each of us pays per year isn’t enough to buy minced meat. Overall, my experience was really poor. The amount of knowledge I gained, the teaching quality, and the number of class hours were far from what I expected considering how much the course costs. If someone truly wants to learn and comes across this school, I strongly recommend avoiding it—there are definitely much better options out there.

Fantastic experience: I really recommend CCEB! It’s not only a place to learn English, but also a place where you feel welcome and supported every day. The teachers are amazing – they make the classes fun and interesting. I learned a lot, and every day I wanted to come back to class. They use different activities, games, and group work to help you speak more and feel more confident with your English. But the best part of CCEB is the people. The staff are so kind and friendly. They always ask how you feel and try to help you with everything – not just with school, but also with your life in Australia. If you are sad, tired, or have any problem, they listen and support you. At CCEB, you are not just a student – you are part of a big family. Thank you, CCEB, for the great experience and for helping me grow, not only in English, but also as a person.

Positive experience: Honestly, I really like this school, overall, I’m having a great experience and I genuinely enjoy going. I’ve met many amazing people and made friends here. Many of the teachers are truly passionate about what they do, and I really appreciate the effort and dedication they put into their work. The reason I’m not giving 5 stars is that I’ve felt the English classes are sometimes unbalanced. On one side, there are students who speak English quite well, while on the other, there are people who struggle to understand even basic communication. This can make things a bit difficult and frustrating at times. I’ve also noticed that a couple of teachers come across as arrogant, and I personally had an unpleasant moment in class with one of them. That said, I believe this is a school that deserves respect. I would definitely recommend it, and I hope the staff takes these points into consideration to continue improving, the potential is there for it to become even better.

Positive experience: I studied a C1 Cambridge Preparation Course in EF Syndey in 2023 so I can compare it with the C1 Cambridge Preparation Course offered in here. There's no C2 level Preparation Course in here so if you're looking for a C2 level you'll have to search more deeply (as there's very few C2 students in Australia) I would say that for the price, this course is worth it, but a little bit more relaxed compared to the one in EF, as there, the study was much more intense to the point I was exhausted, but could cram enough knowledge to approve the C1 in 2.5 months. If you're doing the C1 preparation course here, you'll likely see Stewart as your teacher and he's a great teacher and really funny. Don't expect intense class sessions. I think that if you would like to approve the C1, you should do at least 5 months in here compared to the 2.5 in EF, but the price is more affordable compared to that course. You can always ask the teacher here for more material if you're in an advanced level, but you'll have to put the pressure yourself, whereas in the EF C1 class I was in, everyone was much more serious and dedicated to approve the exam. If your just looking to improve your English from a B1 or B2 I think this school is better for you. My English is in a C2 level so this school didn't have much to offer and I was not challenged in class because my English level is not available but I was ok with it, since I only wanted to study here for the visa.

Cairns College of English & Business
Cairns College of English & Business

We truly appreciate your detailed feedback, Stewart, is indeed a fantastic teacher! We're so glad he made the classes enjoyable for you.

You've hit on a key point regarding the C2 level, and we want to confirm your observation. You're absolutely right – we didn't run a dedicated C2 preparation course because, as you astutely noted, there simply aren't enough students at that advanced level in Cairns to form a viable class so we had to mix with C1 level. We understood this might be a challenge for students like yourself, and this is exactly why we made sure to communicate this limitation to your agent upfront. We wanted to ensure full transparency and manage expectations from your side.
It was genuinely a pleasure having you with us. You were always so kind and smiley, and your positive attitude brightened our classrooms. We truly hope you had a good time meeting other students and that you've settled in well here in Cairns.

Fantastic experience: I love this school. There are many kind staff members who helped me gain confidence in speaking English. When I first joined CCEB, I started in a pre-intermediate class. However, I managed to improve my English skills, and as a result, I was able to join the IELTS training class and achieved a good score on the IELTS exam. There are also many multicultural students from around the world, and I really enjoyed spending time with them — not only in class, but also after class and during dinner. Moreover, the school is located in the center of Cairns City, which was definitely convenient for my school life. To sum up, I was truly satisfied with the time I spent at CCEB.

Negative experience: The only thing I can say about this school is that over the past year, all they’ve been trying to do is take money from students, taking advantage of the fact that they can’t leave or change courses because they would be kicked out of the country. On top of that, the prices are absolutely outrageous, they don’t provide enough resources, they make students attend just for a 30-minute class and then send them home, and they have little to no patience when students struggle with the language. And the worst part!!! If you forget to pay a fee or are late, they fine you $100. If you forget or fail to submit a unit on time, they charge you $150 for each late submission!!! And they don’t even warn you!!! They hide behind the fine print of a contract that was 48,009 pages long. Horrible!!! Several friends there can confirm this. They just want money and don’t teach ANYTHING! I hope this message helps students by preventing them from being charged extra fees when they already have restricted class hours.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience at our school. We take all feedback seriously and want to address the points you’ve raised.
We understand your frustration regarding fees and course structure. Our calendar covers 20 hours of study per week, which includes a combination of face-to-face classes, group projects, and independent learning. Trainers are available to support students from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. We encourage students to utilize these support hours if they are struggling with the language or any aspect of their studies.
Regarding changing courses, we adhere to all relevant laws and regulations. Information about our policies regarding course changes is available at reception and on our website. Students who believe the school is not following regulations are encouraged to contact the Ombudsman. The process for doing so is clearly outlined in every classroom and at reception.
Concerning fees, our pricing for the following year is published every September. When students sign a letter of offer, they agree to the stated fees and payment schedules. While we understand that unforeseen circumstances can occur, late submission of assessments does incur a fee, as outlined in the agreement. It's important to remember that students are also responsible for complying with their visa regulations, which include maintaining satisfactory course progress. This means submitting assessments on time. Failure to do so could be reported to immigration, as required by law.
We regret that your experience has not met your expectations. We are always striving to improve and encourage you to contact us directly to discuss your concerns further. We are committed to providing quality education and support to all our students.

Negative experience: Went here for 2 years to do Cookery. It was an okay experience, really loved Chris who was our teacher! Unfortunately that was all that was good. Sandy who was in charge of the program is absolutely horrible (especially to people who don't speak English very well). I'm originally from the USA so I witnessed her disrespect of other students first hand. They lied to us and made us purchase our own knife set after telling us everything was included in our initial fee. Overall horrible experience. Go somewhere else that is cheaper and they show you some respect. Attended CCEB a few years ago, but wanted to post this now because I have no fears anymore and they can't threaten to cancel my student visa seeing as I'm now a permanent resident.

Cairns College of English & Business
Cairns College of English & Business

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience in our Cookery program. We're happy to hear you enjoyed your time with Chris and appreciate your positive comments about his teaching.

We're sorry to learn that your overall experience was not as positive as you had hoped. We take all feedback seriously. Feedback, whether positive or negative, allows us to address any issues promptly and ensure a respectful learning environment for everyone. We regret that you felt you could not raise these concerns earlier. We want to assure you that all feedback is taken seriously and handled confidentially.

Regarding the knife set, this fee is listed on our published price list. Students are also given the option to purchase their knife set from another supplier if they prefer. This information is communicated to students upon enrolment on during class.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, even after some time has passed. It helps us to continually review our processes and strive to improve. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Negative experience: They don’t even deserve one star I am extremely disappointed with this institution. This college is entirely money-oriented and cares only about profit, not the well-being or education of its students. There is also significant racism within the staff, and I suffered from the behavior of the reception staff and the duty manager. I don’t know their names, but their actions have damaged the reputation of this institution with their poor treatment. They treat students as if they are kindergarten children or even prisoners. They control our movements within the school. One time, I was feeling very sick, and it was obvious. I went downstairs to ask for tissues, and they said they didn’t have any. I asked to go to the pharmacy next to the college to buy some, but they refused, saying I wouldn’t be allowed to reenter the class after leaving. I then got permission from my teacher, who understood my condition, and I quickly ran to the pharmacy. Upon my return, the receptionist prevented me from going back to class and told me to stay in the reception area until lunchtime. It was still very early in the morning, and I asked how I could sit there for so many hours doing nothing. I live far from the college and couldn’t just go home. She responded coldly, saying it wasn’t her problem, and insisted I wait without entering the classroom. I told her I needed to get my coffee and breakfast from my bag in the classroom, but she refused. I asked, “How can I sit here for all these hours without attending classes or even eating? Is this education or punishment?” I felt like I was in a prison, not a learning environment. Her response was harsh and lacked any empathy. I eventually left, crying in the street from the shock of what I had experienced. It started to rain heavily, and I felt cold outside. I decided to take the bus and return home since it was pointless to wait for four hours without lessons or food. I returned to the reception area to inform them that I wanted to retrieve my bag from the classroom so I could go home, but they refused again, saying I had to wait until lunchtime. I became very upset and told her to at least bring my bag to me so I could leave. I asked, “How do you have the right to prevent me from entering or leaving?” To anyone considering studying at this racist school: do not waste your money here. I was forced to leave and couldn’t continue studying there. Even the duty manager wasn’t helpful. She looked at me while I was crying uncontrollably and did nothing. The only person I can thank is my teacher, who tried to comfort me and calm me down. But ultimately, I had no choice but to leave for good. This place feels like a prison, not a school or a proper learning environment. I also tried to contact the college director to request a refund, as I had only attended one day of classes. They refused to refund my full payment, which is unacceptable. I attempted to reach the owner or executive director to explain my experience or at least file a complaint against the receptionist who mistreated me, but no one was cooperative or provided me with the correct contact information. Avoid this place at all costs

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience at our institution. We take all feedback seriously and want to address the points you've raised.

We understand your frustration and are sorry to hear your experience did not meet your expectations. We have reviewed the events of that day and would like to offer some clarification. While a tissue box was not immediately available at the reception desk, one was offered to you shortly after.

Our school policy states that if a student leaves a class for more than 10 minutes without a valid reason, the teacher has the discretion to mark them absent and refuse re-entry to the class. This policy is in place to minimize disruption to learning for all students. Students are provided with three scheduled breaks throughout the day, which allows time for personal errands or needs. We encourage students to utilize these break times for such activities to avoid impacting their class time. In your specific case, while your teacher did give you permission to briefly leave the classroom, the policy regarding re-entry after an extended absence still applies.

We also understand your disappointment regarding the refund. Our refund policy is outlined in the student handbook, which is provided to all students upon enrollment. We encourage you to review this policy.
